EXPLANATORY MEMORANDUM
This Act alters the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 to disqualify a person who was sworn-in as President or Governor to complete the term of the elected President or Governor from being elected to the same office for more than a single term.

A Bill For An Act to alter the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 to disqualify a person who was sworn-in as President or Governor to complete the term of the elected President or Governor from being elected to the same office for more than a single term; and for related matters.
Commencement. [01 JUNE, 2019]
ENACTED by the National Assembly of the Federal Republic of Nigeria –
Alteration of Constitution.
- The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (in this Act referred to as “the Principal Act”) is altered as set out in this Act.
Alteration of section 137
- Section 137 of the Principal Act is altered, by inserting, after subsection (2), a new subsection “(3)”
“(3) A person who was sworn-in as President to complete the term for which another person was elected as President shall not be elected to such office for more than a single term”.
Alteration of section 182
- Section 182 of the Principal Act is altered, by inserting, after subsection (2), a new subsection “(3)”
“(3) A person who was sworn-in as Governor to complete the term for which another person was elected as Governor shall not be elected to such office for more than a single term
Citation.
- This Act may be cited as the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Fourth Alteration, No. 16) Act, 2017.
